What this book asks you to hold
Brown does not write a clean hero's story, and the room shouldn't pretend to read one. Before the conversation starts, name what's in it: the state assassination and imprisonment of Black activists, sexual coercion and violence inside a political organization, the beating of women by men who called themselves liberators, and children raised inside a movement under sustained federal attack. None of it is incidental — Brown means all of it as the argument.
For some people in the room this is family history, not archive. Make participation genuinely optional, and let people decide for themselves how close they want to get to any one thread.

The gap between the platform and the practice is the argument
The Party had one of the most progressive platforms of any Black radical organization of its era — Newton publicly backed women's and gay liberation when that was genuinely radical. And its women were expected to cook, clean, raise children, be sexually available to men "on their revolutionary job," and accept that a woman with authority eroded Black manhood. That gap between stated ideology and daily practice isn't a footnote. It's the book.

Power, or a more sophisticated extraction?
Brown didn't rise because the Party made space for women's leadership — she was appointed in a crisis when Newton fled to Cuba and needed someone he trusted. She led effectively: a liberation school, a winning mayoral campaign, expanded programs — while being undermined at every level. The book asks whether effective leadership inside a structure never designed for you is power, or just a more refined version of the same extraction.

COINTELPRO — failure, or the predictable outcome of assault?
The FBI was actively dismantling the Party throughout this period — assassinating leaders, imprisoning members, infiltrating chapters, funding rivals. Brown inherited an organization already under siege. How much of the internal violence and authoritarianism was the Party's own failure, and how much the predictable result of sustained federal attack? The book raises it without fully answering — and wants the room to argue.

Regina Davis is why she left
Not a political disagreement. Not a strategic split. A woman was beaten on Newton's orders for reprimanding a male coworker at the Liberation School — and the man who had appointed Brown to lead the entire organization authorized it. That ending is the memoir's final and most honest argument about what the revolution was actually protecting.

The discussion questions interrogate the book. These interrogate you. Five questions that don't ask what Brown did — they ask what you've done inside the structures that hold you. Answer the ones that find you.
One
Name a place where you were effective inside a structure that was never built for your authority. Was that power — or were you just useful to it?
It's the question Brown can't stop circling. A job, a family, a church, a movement where you delivered and were never really given the keys. Say what you built there. Then say honestly whether the structure ever became yours, or only ran better because you were in it.
Two
Name something you belong to right now whose stated values and daily practice don't match — and say what keeps you in it.
The gap between platform and practice isn't only the Party's. Most of us are standing in one. Name yours in the present tense, not the past. Then be honest about the thing that keeps you there — the good it does, the people in it, the cost of leaving — without resolving it.
Three
When have you enforced a rule, a pressure, or a silence you had resented receiving?
Brown both suffered the Party's violence and inflicted it; she ordered discipline she'd have raged at on the other end. We pass down what was done to us more often than we admit. Name the time you were on the giving end of something you'd hated receiving — and what it felt like to hand it on.
Four
Name someone you loved who held power over your life — where the love and the harm were the same person, not separable.
Newton was Brown's lover, her mentor, and her nemesis, and the memoir refuses to split him into a good half and a bad one. Most of us have a version of that person. Hold them whole the way Brown holds Newton — and say what it costs to keep loving and accounting in the same breath.

The last time you left something — a job, a church, a relationship, a movement — who paid for your leaving that you didn't fully reckon with at the time?
Brown grabbed her daughter and disappeared, and the women who stayed and the programs that continued paid a price the memoir doesn't fully count. Leaving is rarely free of cost to someone else. Name your own exit, name who absorbed it — and say whether you'd weigh it differently now.
Don't Leave Without It
What They Built
A room that spends an hour on the violence, the betrayal, and the cost forgets that the Black Panther Party also built things that were real, that worked, and that would not have existed without it. The ledger holds both. Before you close, go find what got built.
The Programs
Free breakfast for children, health clinics, schools, legal aid — material good that changed lives in communities the government was not serving. This was not symbolism; people were fed, treated, taught, defended. Name the program in the book that struck you most as a thing that simply worked — and sit with the fact that a flawed organization still did it.
The Music
Brown was a singer and a writer before she was a revolutionary — she recorded albums for the Party and used music as a political tool throughout. The culture wasn't decoration around the politics; it was part of the work. Name the moment the artist inside the activist showed you something the political history alone couldn't.
The Audacity
A Ten Point Program. International solidarity. The sheer nerve of Black people building their own institutions and naming state violence as state violence when that got you killed. Dignity practiced out loud where the world was determined to deny it. Name the moment the Party's ambition genuinely moved you — before you weigh what it cost.
The Capability
Before the room counts the cost, let it name the proof: a Black woman held an organization together under federal assault, ran a winning mayoral campaign, founded a school, and led effectively for three years. Whatever the structure denied her, her capability was undeniable. Name what Brown's competence — and the women's labor that ran the programs — proves about what was always possible.
A book this honest about harm is easy to read as only harm. The Party built real things. Hold them in the same hand as the cost. That's the whole point.
Take a Side, Defend It
Verdict Vote

The Decision
In August 1974, Newton made Brown chair — then fled to Cuba.
She was the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party, and she led effectively for three years. When Newton returned in 1977, he created the conditions that made her departure inevitable. The question isn't whether Brown led well. The question is why Newton appointed her in the first place.
Was Newton's appointment of Brown an act of genuine trust in her leadership — or a calculated decision to use the most capable person available with no intention of sharing power permanently?
Then run the second ballot. Not why Newton appointed her — whether it matters. Does the reason for her appointment change how you understand what she accomplished? Vote again. The gap between your first answer and your second is the conversation worth having, and it's where the room stops evaluating Newton and starts being honest about how it thinks about power and intention everywhere else.

Four ways this specific room will avoid the conversation the book is actually asking for. Learn the tell, keep the pivot ready. The goal is never to win the point — it's to keep the room from hiding behind a true thing to dodge a harder one.
How to use this
You won't need all four. Watch for the tell, drop the pivot sentence, move on. Don't announce that you've caught an evasion — just redirect.
Evasion One
The COINTELPRO Excuse
The room makes government persecution the complete explanation for everything the Party did wrong — including the gender hierarchy. The FBI's campaign was real, documented, and devastating. It is also not a full account of a hierarchy that predated COINTELPRO and would have existed without it.
Pivot
"The FBI explains a lot — but not this. The Ten Point Program has no point about women, and that absence predates the worst of the persecution. So who decided gender liberation wasn't worth naming, and when?"
Evasion Two
Pick a Verdict
The room collapses into pure celebration of the Panthers or pure condemnation of them — either is easier than holding both. The whole kit is built to keep the ledger open. The minute the room picks one column, the argument is over and the harder truth is gone.
Pivot
"We don't have to choose. The ledger holds both. So in the same breath: name one thing the Party built that changed lives, and one thing it extracted that it never returned. Keep them on the same page."
Evasion Three
The Departure Dodge
The room spends its energy on Brown's exit and never asks the harder question of what the women who stayed lived through after she left. The memoir ends where her experience ends — and the silence about everything after 1977 is real, and worth naming, not stepping around.
Pivot
"Brown's story ends when she leaves — but the Party didn't. What happened to the women who stayed? The book goes quiet there, and that silence is part of the argument. Let's sit in what it leaves out."
Evasion Four
Grading the Narrator
The room uses Brown's complicity — the violence she inflicted, the years she stayed — to disqualify her account entirely; or, flipping it, treats her self-implication as making her unimpeachable. Both turn the memoir into a verdict on Brown instead of an account to weigh.
Pivot
"A narrator who implicates herself isn't disqualified by it, and isn't sainted by it either. Let's weigh what she's telling us — not grade her for telling it. What does the account show that a purer narrator couldn't?"

Opposite Reading Mode
Underneath every question in this kit runs one interpretive seam, and every room splits along it whether or not it says so. When the conversation stalls or goes one-sided, assign the two readings deliberately — make half the room argue each — and don't resolve it for them.

Reading A · Liberation that failed its women
The harm is a wound in a real project
The Party did world-changing good — fed children, named state violence, built institutions no one else would — and tragically reproduced the patriarchy of its era inside that work. The programs, the platform, the audacity are the truth of what it was. The gender hierarchy is a failure within a liberatory movement, not its essence. Judge it as a flawed liberation, not a fraud.
Reading B · Extraction that called itself liberation
The harm is the structure, not the wound
The Party built its liberation on the unliberated labor, bodies, and silence of its women. A movement that names every oppression except the one it practices is not a liberation movement for everyone — it's liberation for some that extracted the rest. The gender hierarchy isn't a flaw in the project; it's how the project was load-bearing. Celebrating the build without centering the cost continues the same erasure.
Where to land the room
Don't pick a winner. The productive end is the harder move underneath both: refusing to rank them. Brown's own position seems to be that "genuinely liberatory" and "genuinely extractive" are both completely true — and that the demand to decide which one is "the real Party" is itself the move that erases the women a second time. Sit the room in that refusal. The discomfort of not choosing is the book working.
